The Klezmer Ensemble

The Klezmer Ensemble is dedicated to interpreting Klezmer or traditional Jewish music. This artistic ensemble is composed of pupils from the Vítězslava Kapralová Primary School of Arts Brno, named after the essential Czech composer and native of Brno. For many decades it has been a worthy representative of the culture in this part of Brno. It has become a stepping stone for many professional artists and has left an indelible mark on the cultural life of hundreds, even thousands of children.

The young aspiring artists are passionate about delving into the mysterious sad-cheerful melodies that are typical of the music of the Jewish people. In addition to Klezmer, the repertoire includes other music with Jewish themes, such as melodies from Hans Krása's children's opera Brundibár. This opera played a crucial role in children's stay in the Terezín concentration camp between 1942 and 1943. This provides an interesting link between the past and the present, as one of the members of the ensemble is the grandson of Anna Hanusová-Flachová, who, as a child, performed Brundibár at Terezín.
